Theatre Ontario Workshop Health and Safety for Independent and Community Theatres

Have you ever referred to “Macbeth” as “The Scottish Play”? Most people do so to avoid the fabled curse that has been blamed for accidents ranging from falls to burns to an accidental stabbing. Whether or not you believe in curses and superstition, there’s no denying that accidents in theatre can happen – many of them serious. But if you’re aware of the risks and properly prepared to keep your team safe (and yourself legally protected), you can move forward with confidence.

During this 3-hour workshop, the unique health and safety challenges faced by independent and community theatres like yours will be addressed. Topics to be covered will include:

  • Inroduction to Health & Safety in the Theatre
  • Health & Safety Law, Rights & Responsibilities (with focus on volunteers)
  • Risk Assessment
  • Health & Safety for Stage Crew
  • Best Practices
  • Resources

You will leave ready to take initial steps towards a safer show, and empowered to make responsible decisions related to health and safety in your organization.
